Depending on your energy demands and your battery system you could supplement all of your electricity with one efficient well built generator. The most important parts of your system are the battery bank and the wind generator. However not all batteries are created equal, and if your not using the correct batteries, your generator is not going to be efficient.

The Batteries You Should Use
Whether you DIY or buy a commercial wind generator the most important part of the system, is how you store your energy. I personally would never buy a commercial wind generator, but that's just me. I have too much fun making my own, and they are not rocket science. Where most systems fail to be efficient is usually in the battery bank. There are different types of batteries and the ones used for electrical storage of this nature should be deep cycle batteries. A deep cycle battery has thick lead plates and they are often heavy. If your thinking you can use automotive car batteries to store and use your electricity... your going to have batteries prematurely failing. This is because SLI batteries are not made the same way as deep cycle batteries, and the lead within will be eaten away. SLI batteries are designed for quick electrical demands, not prolonged electrical draining. Deep cycle batteries like L-16 forklift batteries are designed for prolonged electrical discharge and recharging.
Wind Generators For Home - Are As Efficient As The Battery Bank
Even if you had a 1kw hour wind generator, it's still only as effective as the means of storage. This is why your battery bank is perhaps the most important part of the system. I'd rather have a 400kw hour wind generator with a good deep cycle battery bank, than a 1kwh generator with a semi good battery bank. You should also consider that smaller wind generators will operate at lower mph wind speeds, and consistently trickle charge your batteries. Just find some good deep cycle batteries for your battery bank, and you won't have your batteries prematurely failing. I learned this lesson the hard way... So I'll pass on the tip, to hopefully save a battery or two... hundred...
